Kurdistan Region President Massoud Barzani firmly condemned the bombardment of Kurdistan border villages by Iran and Turkey. Along with asking the neighbors to cease this policy, President Barzani assured that the leaders of Kurdistan Region are ready to support the regional countries to peacefully solve their Kurdish issues.

"What surprises me is that Iran's latest bombardments are much tougher than Turkey's. This was not expected," said President Barzani, explaining that Turkey and Iran are applying more pressure to suit their own purposes. Without identifying those purposes, he said, "If they bombard us a hundred more times, they will not be able to impose anything upon us."

Barzani attended the region's Parliament session on Tuesday to address members about Kurdistan's current situation and relations, the political progress in Baghdad, and about his Monday meeting in Baghdad with U.S. President George W. Bush. Parliament resumed the session of its second term for the third year, after a two-month summer holiday.

Recent agreements between the two largest Kurdish parties, Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), led by Barzani, and Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), led by the current Iraqi president, Jalal Talabani, were referenced to in the Kurdistan president's statement to Parliament members. Barzani assured that this "important, well-improved agreement" between the two Kurdish parties will be held in reserve.

"This KDP-PUK alliance will be kept and continued. During the Kurdistan people's history, there never has been a more high-level relation than this between these parties."

Within his statement, Barzani pointed to the five-side agreement sealed among the two Kurdish parties, the Shiite Al-Dawa Party, the Supreme Council, and Sunni Vice President Tariq Al-Hashimi. He said that this agreement is intended to settle disputes on constitutional affairs, the oil law, militias, and other issues. The most important item of this agreement, Barzani said, concerns discussions on the signing of a security strategy with the U.S.; such a step would have been rejected by the Iraqi groups two years ago.

Regarding the meeting with President Bush in Baghdad, Barzani described him as "a brave man," adding, "Bush has promised not to give up on Iraq. He praised the roles by President Talabani, the Kurdistan president, and the other leaders of the five-side agreement." President Bush described this agreement as a political victory.

Regarding the implementation of Article 140 of the Iraqi Constitution, Barzani assured that they would never accept any political decree calling for its delay.
